What's up, friends? I thought my life was going to slow down since I last posted... 9 months ago, WOW - but it has done exactly the opposite. I'm in graduate school for therapy and counseling and it has taken up ALL of my time. Over the summer, I took an amazing vacation with The Boy to meet his extended family in Europe. I became a paw-rent to the most wonderful cat in the universe... and I GOT ENGAGED!

I had assumed he would propose in autumn, after we got back from the trip, but he really surprised me! With the way school is going, I'll get my master's degree, take a leave of absence to get married, then go back to school to complete my counseling internship.

Fannish life has been put on pause, but if anyone wants to beta read a Jaime/Brienne snowed-in modern AU, hit me up! My goal is to publish before the end of the year.
Hey friends, I've realized that it's been a whole year since I've posted because last year was WILD for me. I'm a big believer in prayer, intention, and "luck" as the intersection of preparation and opportunity. Since then, I have:
- started graduate school for therapy and counseling
- picked up writing short fic again
- moved in with my partner
- adopted a cat
- got a new job
- started discussing marriage

These have all been positive changes for me, yet there are still many negative things happening across the country. To help in whatever way I can, I'm offering my fandom friends Pay What You Wish tarot readings. 20% of the profits will be split between the Mazzoni Center, located in my hometown, who provides quality comprehensive health and wellness services to LGBTQ people and the Transgender Education Network of Texas, who is dedicated to furthering gender diverse equality in Texas, USA.

Hit me up if you'd like one! Text: Snowflake Challenge January 1-31" width="300">

I'm going to challenge you to say yes to something that scares you. You're right - this is taken directly from Shonda Rhimes' book Year of Yes. However, I tried something similar to this in 2016. When I think of the times I've said no to something repeatedly, it's because I'd created a narrative that I started to believe. For example, at some point, I decided I didn't look good in the color red. It was too loud, didn't look good on brown skin, whatever. It was just that - a narrative that I reinforced every time I passed over a red shirt and chose a black one instead. Then, I decided to say yes to red lipstick and have been loving it. Maybe I'll add more red to my wardrobe, maybe not. But that small yes was enough to debunk old stories I'd created about myself.

So go ahead. Say YES to taking a break because your self worth is not defined by your productivity. Say YES to trying a new menu item at your favorite restaurant. Say YES to creating boundaries with friends and family. Say YES to canceling plans so that you can focus on yourself. Say yes to SAYING NO. Or even... say YES to making a transformative works statement and posting it on your favorite platform.

comments

Snowflake Challenge Day #5: Canon you love

Text: Snowflake Challenge January 1-31" width="300">

I've recently been into Hades/Persephone retellings and have been consuming them as fanfics and pro works. The bare bones canon of Greek mythology is that Persphone, daughter of Zeus and Demeter, is abducted by Hades, God of the Underworld. Allegedly, Zeus okayed the abduction because Persephone's "overbearing" mother wouldn't allow her to leave Earth. Distraught that her daughter had been literally kidnapped, Demeter would not allow the Earth to produce food, which led humans to die of starvation. They compromised that Persephone would spend half the year on Earth (spring & summer) and half the year in the Underworld (fall and winter).

While this is very problematic, it's still unfortunately common. A woman's life is decided by others, without her agency or input and she has to make the best of what comes next. I enjoy this canon because it allows for such easy adaptation where Persephone (or the Persephone-character) may have been thrust into a life that she didn't ask for, yet she refuses to "make the best of it". Instead, she conquers the man and the kingdom that tried to subjugate her.

I suppose that's cheating, but it's also the truth. XD

P.S. Just make a transformative works statement and post it all over the internet so that people can riff on YOUR canons (or not!).

comments

It's obvious from my AO3 that I'm a podficcer, who dabbles in cover art. In 2019, I wrote about why I only post my fic in The Anonymous Community on AO3. (TL;DR - In 2012, I wrote a 20K story for the reel_merlin community on Livejournal and a "friend" told me that the story was boring and had no voice.) Every fic I read re-shatters my confidence and this is the only place that I'm comfortable posting. I'm hoping to finish this Jaime/Brienne fic I'm mapping out some time this year. I'll take any advice my writer friends can offer! XD

ETA: I'm also getting into drawing for the first time, but this is less of a goal and more of an exploration of "how do hands work???" I did one okay drawing over the summer, so the ability might be there if I can figure out how to hone it.

comments

As a Black American woman, it can sometimes be hard to see yourself in 'new' places, even though people like you have been there all along, just intentionally ignored and left out of history. I'd love to look at how we look in the future.

comments

If you've seen me around, it was probably related tarot, podfic, or me, asking you to make a transformative works statement and post it everywhere, especially in your AO3 profile.

2020 was a hard year for me personally and professionally. I started going back to therapy. I had surgery, after 10 months of doctors dismissing my concerns as "nothing to worry about". I built a case to get rid of an abusive boss. And, most importantly, I rediscovered my capacity for loving myself and others.

Unfortunately, this meant that fandom took a major back seat and I basically fell off the radar for 6 months. I'm excited to meet new people and see what I missed. :D

comments

The goal this summer has been to explore who I am outside of work and it's absolutely WILD to me how much art I missed on my journey as a Math Girl. I tried my hand at drawing (pics below), pottery, writing, and dance. Drawing is the easiest, most cost effective pursuit and I made the pic below on Day 5 after a lifetime of not even doodling in school. Drawing friends, if you have any tips or resources, hit me up! Right now it's just me and a book from the library.
Snowflake Challenge - Day 15

Talk about why you participated in Snowflake &/or what you got out of it. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

To be completely honest, I come back to Snowflake Challenge to increase the number of people who make a transformative works statement and post it in their AO3 profile.

Other than that... I see this challenge as a way to reacquaint myself with fandom. I usually stay in my podfic corner, so I don't know what's going on elsewhere. This season I learned about new communities, made some new friends, and gained 10% more confidence about getting into writing. I reconnected with some old friends (hi growlery & teigh_corvus!) and even made some new ones (hey sexycazzy & ineptshieldmaid). I talked about my process for creating a podfic, told people to make time for themselves, and talked about why those subtle hand touches drive me wild.

Today I'm going remind myself why I got into fandom. I'm going to fill as many requests as I can from the Day 6 Wish Lists and give back to my fellow creators.

comments

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

My #1 goal during Snowflake season is to get every person participating to make a transformative works statement and post it in their AO3 profile.

For the rest of the year, my goals are:

- financial prosperity

- adding joy to my life

- reconnecting with friends

- writing a fanfiction over 1000 words.

The past three years have been a series of unfortunate events for me. I left grad school without completing my degree. I had a teaching job where I was fired over a situation I had never been trained to handle. Then, I worked at a temporary job that was a nightmare. Now I'm finally in a place where every decision I make doesn't feel so heavy. Now I want to start bringing joy into my life instead of worrying about finding a job every 12 months.

On Day 5 of Snowflake Challenge, I talked a little about how and why I stopped writing fic. Quite honestly, I enjoy making podfic way more than making anything else. It's just that sometimes I don't want look through AO3 for a fic that inspires me to record. I just want it to be here! In my phone already! Anyway. I have half a Spock/Uhura story written, so we'll see how that goes.

comments

In your own space, create your own challenge. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I'm sure that all of you have made a transformative works statement and posted it in your AO3 profile by now.

So my challenge to you is to do something you LOVE. I want it to bring you Marie Kondo-style joy. When was the last time that you did something just for you? Not because you felt obligated or needed to cross it off your to-do list, but to make yourself happy?

This past holiday season, I didn't give anyone Christmas gifts so that I could save money to visit my sister. Some people called it selfish, but I refuse to give to other people who aren't giving back to me. It's my responsibility to make myself happy and I take that responsibility very seriously. I implore you to do the same thing. Read a fic. Sing and dance to your favorite song. Buy that thing that you've been eyeing online. Just make sure that you feel ♥ afterward.

comments

Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or check out some fanworks that are new to you. (The recs from Day 2 might be a good place to start.) Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I wracked my brain for this one. I spent all of yesterday promoting the creation of transformative works statements, which is a lot of work, but not very new. Today, I'm going to explore new sections of fandom and comment on fanworks in fandoms I've never tried before. A lot of people participating in Snowflake Challenge are involved in different fandoms (I heard something about a McShep?), it's time to get to them and leave some ♥_♥ while I'm at it.

comments
